What do hashpower and reorganization history mean for BSV security?

“BSV has less hashpower than BTC and a reorg history. Governance responses cannot replace Nakamoto consensus.”

The answer without the theater.

A proof-of-work chain with less economically committed hashpower can be cheaper to reorganize than a higher-hash chain using the same algorithm, all else equal. Applications should model current conditions, transaction value, double-spend exposure, and service dependencies. Proofs establish inclusion and ancestry; they do not create absolute settlement. BSV's NAR and alert mechanisms add response options and institutional risk rather than substituting for hashpower.

The objection's strongest ground

  • Proof-of-work security is economic and relative, not a permanent property conferred by a chain name.
  • A valid-chain dispute, invalid transaction, double spend, accidental fork, and policy intervention are different events.
  • Confirmation policy should depend on value, reversibility, observed network conditions, and threat model.

Do not claim more than the evidence

  • No static confirmation number is safe for every value and failure mode.
  • Calling adversarial behavior dishonest does not remove the need to detect, price, and respond to it.
  • This site does not currently publish an independently audited incident database.

A better next move than arguing

  1. Monitor chainwork, producer distribution, competing tips, stale blocks, double-spend signals, and the services relied upon.
  2. Document action thresholds for low, medium, and high-value workflows before accepting irreversible consequences.
  3. Reconstruct incidents from block data, node logs, alerts, and signed decisions rather than retrospective labels.

What would change this answer?

Material shifts in hash economics, producer diversity, attack history, monitoring, or rule enforcement should change the assessment quickly.
